About Dr. Ida Rolf, Ph.D

“Rolfers make a life study of relating bodies and their fields to the earth and its gravity field, and we so organize the body that the gravity field can reinforce the body’s energy field.  This is our primary concept.”

Dr. Rolf is the founder of Structural Integration. A Ph.D. in Biochemistry in the 1920’s, she left a career at the Rockefeller Institute to explore Osteopathy, Chiropractic Medicine, Yoga, The Alexander Technique, Homeopathic Medicine, and other awareness-based practices. During her research she made a fundamental discovery about the human body: the network of connective tissue that permeates the body can be manipulated into more easeful and dynamic patterns when it has moved out of alignment.

Dr. Rolf honed and taught her work, and it gained popularity in the 60’s and 70’s, propelled forward by the human potential movement that came out of Esalen Institute. She trained several teachers who have continued her work even after her death in 1979 at the age of 83, and there are now several schools that teach her work.
